Intro

wing chun kung fu training

Wing Chun is the name of a system of martial arts developed in southern China. Its origins are lost in Chinese history and lore, but became more documented from the mid 1800s, during the time of the Tai Ping uprising. It was during this time that the art became a quick to learn martial art. While there are over a dozen different lineages of wing chun, it was in 1949 when Yip Man brought his style of wing chun out of China to Hong Kong. It spread around the world to become the most popular lineage of wing chun. Leung Ting, one of the last students of Yip Man, developed a more structured and theory driven system, furthered by Emin Boztepe. It's this lineage that is taught at Tees Valley Kung Fu. A system that can be used by anybody, regardless of size or strength.

About

Instructor Alasdair Kirby
Alasdair Kirby demonstrating wing chun at a charity martial arts demonstration for Claire House Hospice.

Instructor Alasdair Kirby has over 30 years experience in martial arts, most of that in wing chun. In addition, he trained in judo for 12 years, earning his 1st dan black belt through competitive gradings and the 3-man line-up. Having setup Wirral Wing Chun Academy for 12 years, he has taught instructors John Tsang, King Sun Leong and Tim Pretlove. They took over the running of this club when Alasdair moved to Teesside. As a martial arts instructor he believes in a hands on approach and is always aiming to improve his own techniques and increase his knowledge of the system.

Teesside Wing Chun teaches authentic Wing Chun with a modern edge. We believe in our students asking questions and testing the techniques they are taught under pressure and in sparring. We also have grappling and escrima training on an ad-hoc basis within the sessions.

We teach Wing Chun Kung Fu in a fun, informal, environment; all levels of fitness and experience welcome. Come along and try it.
